Managing Director

Steve Wlodychak serves as Managing Director in the Transaction Advisory Services practice at Portage Point Partners. Steve has deep expertise guiding private equity (PE) firms and companies through complex federal, state and local tax (SALT) issues inherent to mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Steve has advised on the SALT implications of more than 900 transactions across all 50 US states over the last three decades, making him a trusted advisor to clients navigating the complex M&A tax landscape.

Prior to Portage Point, Steve served as State and Local Tax Policy Leader in Ernst & Young (EY)’s America’s Tax Policy in Washington, DC. Previously, Steve held various roles in EY’s M&A practice in Los Angeles and New York, where he advised various notable PE clients including The Carlyle Group, Thoma Bravo, Hellman & Friedman, Clayton, Dublier & Rice, Kelso & Company, Ares Management, Apollo Global Management, Warburg Pincus, Brookfield Corporation and The Yucaipa Companies.

Earlier in his career, Steve held various legal positions with Prudential Insurance Company of America and McCarter & English, a prominent New Jersey regional law firm. Steve began his career serving in New Jersey’s state government, including a role in the governor’s office.

A respected educator and thought leader, Steve currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Graduate Tax Program at the Villanova University Charles Wigder School of Law and has lectured on SALT topics at Georgetown University Law Center and Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

Steve continues to shape the field as a contributing writer for Tax Analysts, authoring thought leadership on state tax issues. His published work includes in-depth analyses of the taxation of pass-through entities such as partnerships, LLCs and S corporations.

Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in International Economics (cum laude) from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, a Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, New Jersey and a Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.
